Today, we celebrate the 90th birthday of G. Allan Kingston — a man whose life and work have transformed communities, changed systems and inspired a generation of affordable housing advocates. Widely regarded as the “Father of Affordable Housing,” Allan has dedicated more than half a century to lifting up those most in need, ensuring that families, seniors, veterans and individuals experiencing homelessness have access not only to housing, but to opportunity and dignity.

As President and CEO of Century Housing for 18 years, Allan led one of the country’s largest affordable housing lenders and developers. Under his leadership, Century Housing financed more than 14,000 affordable and workforce apartment homes across 250 developments in 52 communities throughout Southern California and oversaw $450 million in loan originations.

He also founded More than Shelter to provide essential wraparound services, including after-school tutoring, job training, academic counseling, transitional housing for veterans, senior services and even the creation of two charter middle schools. His visionary approach helped shift the narrative from simply building housing to creating long-term community well-being.

Allan’s relationship with National CORE began in 1999 when he was appointed to the Board of Directors. His impact only deepened over time as he took on the role of Vice Chairman, becoming a trusted spokesperson and national advocate for National CORE’s growth. Drawing on his vast expertise and professional network, Allan played a key role in advancing National CORE’s mission and expanding its reach across the country. His vision for neighborhood revitalization in the face of rising costs, limited resources and complex housing challenges continues to guide our work today.

On this special occasion, the entire National CORE and Hope through Housing family extends our deepest gratitude and warmest wishes to G. Allan Kingston. Your leadership, generosity and belief in what is possible have created a legacy that will continue to uplift lives for generations. Happy 90th birthday, Allan.

Thank you for showing us what it truly means to build hope, home and community.
