Pomona, Calif. – City of Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval praised National CORE’s commitment to provide housing to those in need while uplifting residents through vital enrichment and support as part of the city’s celebration of Affordable Housing Month.

Sandoval and the City Council issued the special proclamation on May 19, with National CORE Community Development Director Sandra Espadas accepting the honor.

National CORE is one of the nation’s leading developers of affordable housing, with about 11,000 apartment homes across over 110 developments in California, Texas and Florida – including one in Pomona.

“National CORE is grateful to be recognized during Pomona’s Affordable Housing Month. It is very inspiring to know the goals of our organization align so deeply with the city’s mission,” Espadas said. “We hope we can continue this partnership for many years to come, to ensure future generations have access to housing that is safe, clean and affordable.”

National CORE opened its Veterans Park community in Pomona in 2021. The community provides 61 apartment homes for veterans and their families who earn less than 60% of the area median income. Veterans are among the nation’s most at-risk communities when it comes to housing and homelessness – with a total number reaching more than 32,800 in 2024.

The Hope through Housing Foundation provides onsite services for residents, which include financial coaching, after-school programs, mental health resources and community support for seniors – all of which contribute to ensuring that residents maintain their housing while improving their financial and career prospects.

Veterans Park was created with ease of transportation in mind, just two blocks from the Pomona Transit Center. It is within walking distance of Pomona’s Downtown Arts District, which has a bustling entertainment scene, shops, restaurants and a row of antique shops.

This year, National CORE will break ground on Prisma Artist Lofts on Pomona’s Mission Boulevard. The four-floor community will provide 75 apartment homes to families earning below 60% of the area median income. The development will feature community lounges on each floor, a stunning courtyard, an 1,860-square-foot gallery space, a community club and study and private balconies for each apartment. Hope through Housing will provide support services for residents.

National CORE Chief Development Officer Alexa Washburn said the City of Pomona has been an amazing supporter.

“We’re very proud of the work we’ve done in collaboration with the City of Pomona and the work we have on our horizon – it’s a very exciting time for both of us,” Washburn said. “Pomona has a rich history of culture, and we know Prisma Artist Lofts will fit into the values of the neighborhood to deepen its thriving arts scene.”

Washburn said Prisma Artist Lofts is being developed to ensure families and the next generation of young professionals benefit from access to affordable housing.

“One of the city’s priorities is to provide our residents with housing choices that enable them to continue living in Pomona,” Sandoval said. “National CORE’s Prisma Artist Lofts will include affordable work/live lofts that will enable artists to live within our thriving arts district.”
