DOWNEY, Calif. – National CORE, one of the nation’s pre-eminent nonprofit developers of affordable and senior housing, reports extraordinary response to two days of pre-applications for its transformational multifamily housing complex in downtown Downey.
Downey View will hold its grand opening in December and welcome its first move ins in January 2015. The community will feature 50 two and three-bedroom units for residents earning at or below 50 percent of Area Median Income.
This past Friday and Saturday, the pre-application process was opened and more than 700 were distributed, with 271 of them returned the first day alone. Of those early returns, 62 percent came from people who live or work in Downey. Due to the overwhelming response, a waiting list of 400 will be generated.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the response,” said Steve PonTell, Chief Executive Officer for National CORE (National CORE). “This speaks to the overwhelming need in Downey, Southern California and across the nation for high-quality affordable housing.”
Rising five stories and with full subterranean parking, Downey View will become a cornerstone for the redevelopment of downtown Downey. Amenities will include a community room, a rooftop garden and a private patio for each unit. At the project’s groundbreaking last year, then-Downey Mayor Mario Guerra called Downey View “the big piece of the puzzle” with regard to revitalizing the downtown area.
