Former U.S. Sen. John Seymour, who passed away in April, was a respected leader who helped shape both the field of affordable housing and the early foundation of National CORE.
Senator Seymour was strong advocate for policies that supported community stability and expanded opportunity, principles that continue to guide our work today.
He believed the housing crisis could be addressed by increasing supply, removing barriers and creating the right incentives for the private sector to be part of the solution. He championed tools like low-income housing tax credits and financing programs that remain central to how affordable housing is developed today.
In the early days of the Southern California Housing Development Corporation, which later became National CORE, the senator served as our first CEO. He stepped in at a critical time and helped bring structure, credibility and leadership to an organization that was still finding its footing.
More than that, he truly believed in what National CORE was doing and cared deeply about the people we served. He saw the potential of this work to change lives and never lost sight of who we ultimately served.
His legacy continues through his son, John Seymour Jr., whose work has helped build and strengthen our footprint in San Diego.
Recent news coverage has highlighted Senator Seymour’s longstanding commitment to Hope through Housing, leading many to reach out to his family and to us with questions about how to honor his memory.
As we reflect on Senator Seymour’s life, it’s a reminder that the work we do today is built on the vision and commitment of those who came before us.
At the request of the Seymour family, we are sharing that Hope through Housing has established a dedicated gift program in honor of Senator Seymour. If you would like to make a donation in his name, please click here.
