Nearly 90 professionals crowded into The Parkline housing community on Aug. 26, clutching resumes and braving the Los Angeles summer heat, all with the hope of snagging a coveted role at HavenCORE.
HavenCORE, National CORE’s property management department, is in amid a major expansion, seeking maintenance technicians, assistant managers and property managers for posts in the Los Angeles area.
Maria Carbajal, 35, said the job fair was a welcome sight. She has been unemployed since her administrative job’s office closed in March. Carbajal interviewed for an assistant manager position at Pioneer Village in Glendale, National CORE’s largest affordable new housing community.
“It is so amazing that such a big company is not only hiring, but also offers so many great benefits, like onsite housing, 401K and vacation time,” Carbajal said. “The HavenCORE workers that interviewed me were so nice and friendly. I can tell they’re a great team.”
The job fair interview process included in-depth questions about customer service, knowledge of management experience and, for maintenance workers, an on-the-spot equipment test with items such as GFCI outlets and u-bend pipes.
Andrew Ayala, 27, applied for a maintenance position and was pleased HavenCORE took care to look for applicants with hands-on skills. He was also impressed by the size of the HavenCORE maintenance team.
“I work mostly by myself at my current job, and I want to work for a larger, hard-working team,” Ayala said.
Paradise Anderson, 23, said too many companies have become stagnant, offering little in the way of career opportunities. She said HavenCORE is different from her past property management positions.
“So many places offer no room for expansion and it’s difficult or impossible to move up,” Anderson said. “It’s so great to hear that, even with the job marketing being so bad, HavenCORE is stable and expanding.”
By the end of the day, HavenCORE Director of Operations Arlene Ortiz said the team had interviewed a strong cadre of candidates and even made several job offers.
“The job fair has been a huge success,” Ortiz said. “We’re so excited to have so many new employees join our team and excited to see HavenCORE and National CORE continue to grow and expand.”
