EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Alta Vista Apartments, the newest of National CORE’s state-of-the-art, environmentally superior affordable housing developments, will open soon, meeting rigorous and highly coveted standards set by the U.S. Green Building
Council.
Grand opening will be held in March for the 60-unit facility, which meets the council’s Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) status. In addition, Alta Vista is National CORE’s first transit-oriented development, located directly across from the Gold Line in East Los Angeles.
“The environmental stewardship that this project represents is truly remarkable, and a significant priority for us as the third largest national nonprofit developer of affordable housing,” said Steve PonTell, chief executive officer for Rancho Cucamonga-based National CORE.
“There are only a few developers in the country that could have built a project like this.” The council’s LEED for Homes New Construction program certifies developments that meet the highest standards for efficiency and low environmental impact. Alta Vista is currently being considered for certification.
Among the integrated features at Alta Vista are 12 ground-floor, live-work units set aside for small home businesses, and two floors of underground parking. The proximity to the Gold Line further mitigates impact on air quality by promoting mass transit. The development meets the green design standards of the County of Los Angeles, and is consistent with the Southern California Association of Government’s 2012-2035 Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy, which calls for more live-work projects as a way to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
Alta Vista, located at 5051 E. Third St. in unincorporated East Los Angeles, is among about 80 National CORE affordable-housing projects serving individuals, families and seniors. In all, CORE manages 8,800 units in California, Arkansas, Texas and Florida, and through its Hope through Housing subsidiary has provided more than 2 million hours in supportive services to enhance quality of life, including preschool, afterschool and senior wellness programs.
CORE has earned numerous national honors, including, in L.A. County, “Best Creative Financing of an Affordable Apartment” from the National Association of Home Builders for its Encanto Court development in South Central Los Angeles. In addition to developing and managing affordable housing projects, CORE has emerged as a national voice on community revitalization. Southern California alone is 600,000 housing units short of meeting demand.
“The affordable-housing crisis in this country is about more than who can or cannot afford shelter,” said PonTell. “It has broad economic and social implications, and we’re working to make this the national priority it needs to be.”
