SAN DIEGO – Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held on April 14 for the highly anticipated Encanto Village residential community, providing high-quality affordable housing in a mixed-use, transit-oriented setting.
Encanto Village features 65 apartment homes for individuals and families earning between 30-60 percent of the area media income. Eight of the apartments will be set aside for veterans experiencing homelessness and their families, with programs and services provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Veterans Administration through HUD VASH project based vouchers with financial assistance through CIVIC San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC).
“We’re thrilled to be able to move one step closer to addressing a critical need for high-quality affordable housing in San Diego,” said Steve PonTell, President and Chief Executive Officer for National CORE (National CORE), the master developer for Encanto Village. “The partnership that has made Encanto Village possible will transform the lives of those who live here and create additional economic opportunities for the community at large.”
When completed, Encanto Village will feature 30 one-bedrooms units, 18 two-bedroom units and 17 three-bedroom units. The community will be universally designed with green point rated sustainability features and be drug and smoke-free. Water conservation features will be incorporated to create a California native and naturalized plant landscape.
Amenities will include two resident gardens, stunning courtyards, an outdoor play area for children, laundry room, secure bicycle storage spaces, electric-vehicle charging spaces, real-time kiosks displaying arrival and departure times of the Encanto Trolley Station and a community room for events and on-site services, such as after-school activities and financial literacy classes.
Project partners include HUD, VA, Civic San Diego, SDHC, City of San Diego, Father Joe’s Villages and St. Paul’s PACE.
“Encanto Village is the type of development that the City of San Diego needs to address its continuing shortage of affordable rental housing and the homeless crisis. The San Diego Housing Commission is pleased to collaborate with our elected officials, National CORE and additional partners on this important development near public transportation that will provide housing opportunities for low-income families and homeless Veterans,” SDHC President & CEO Richard C. Gentry said.
